Road Trip Update…

Thanks for being so patient with the lack of posts here.  I appreciate all of the comments left and the emails from you with well-wishes.  We left San Francisco on November 9 and hit the road going up to Redding and Weed, California.  We decided to keep going and ended up spending our first night over at Klamath Falls, Oregon.  From there we went on to check out Bend and ended up in Portland.  From Portland (where we stayed a night or 2) we went to Seattle and stayed there a couple of days.  From Seattle we went to try and get over the border to Canada (Vancouver).  The wait on the Monday that was the long weekend (last week) was going to be about 3 hours.  We ended up just spending the night in a little town nearby.  We got up early the next morning and it took us just about 10 minutes to get to the border.  We then had a ‘pop quiz’…thank goodness we passed! ha!  We spent a few days in Canada and really enjoyed ourselves.  We then left and landed back in Seattle for one night.  We spent a couple of nights back in Portland where we saw one of the coolest things ever!  We watched a CycloCross race this past Sunday!  Anyway…we left Monday and visited Eugene and we’re spent the night in Ashland.  Yup, we’re here right now. We’re going to check out a few things today and then head back to California.  I’m hoping to be somewhere in San Francisco for Thanksgiving where I can maybe find a place that serves Tofurky!

So….that’s the quick mini-update.  Sorry it lacks detail and is boring.  I’ll be sure to share photos with you all later when I have more (reliable) internet access.  Hope you’re all well!!

Blue Flip Art

I received a little email from Matt Regan of BlueFlip Art, a little art print site that he runs. How did I not know about him sooner?! BlueFlip Art sells high-quality prints of works by artists and illustrators that are super affordable. The goals is to get these pieces into the hands of as many people as possible. Nothing is priced over $45 and most prints are under $20.

One of my favorite things that Matt’s company does - the participating artists get to choose a non-profit charity to donate 10% of the sale price of the print to. Again, another purchase you can feel good about.

Every Monday a new limited edition print is released at 3pm PST. This week’s (November 5’s) featured print is called “The Alchemy of Love Songs” by Maryland-based artist John Shipman. 10% of every sale will be donated ot the George Harrison UNICEF Fund.

The Alchemy of Love Songs Print

There are a ton of other fabulous prints that you should check out at BlueFlip Art. Thank you to Matt and the artists who are giving the world good art that’s affordable and donating monies to charity.

Get To Know: Nancy Veltri of Modern Art Everyday

Here’s some fun facts about one of our sponsors, Modern Art Everyday.

Modern Art Everyday Logo

Meet Nancy Veltri of Modern Art Everyday:

Name: Nancy Veltri

Business Name: Modern Art Everyday

Where are you located?
My home-based studio is in New Jersey.

What is it that you design and create?
Affordable modern art

What is your favorite part of the design process?
I’m excited by the creative process. I really enjoy creating new pieces of artwork, posting them on my site, and tracking their popularity.

How did you come up with your business name?
To be honest I wanted something simple that people could remember easily. Modern Art Everyday is not only simple, but it really describes what I do; a new pieces of art posted daily.

Where/How did this all begin?
After designing consumer flooring for 6 years, I grew tired of office politics and creative constraints. I knew I was capable of so much more. So in early 2005 I began my own business as an experiment. But it soon became obvious that it would be impossible to build a successful business while still working full-time at my “day job”. So with the support of my family, I resigned from the flooring industry and became my own boss. I have never looked back!

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, patterns, texture and color. I find beauty in simple, clean designs with a modern touch. I also feel an obligation to my customers to give them a reason to keep visiting my website and that inspires me.

What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Take risks, embrace change, believe in yourself and, most importantly, stay positive! A positive attitude makes all things possible and inspires those around you.

What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Photographs from Laura Crow

What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
KT Tunstall and David Gray

What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
The Office and Top Chef

What was the last movie you watched?
Fracture

What’s your favorite food?
Peanut Butter

What’s your favorite candy?
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Coffee or Tea?
Coffee

What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Target

Any pets?
Yes, I love animals and I have 3 pets: a cat named Margie, a lab named Charlie, and a greyhound named Echo. They are my faithful companions in my home-based studio.

Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
Hawaii. In fact I was married in a garden overlooking the beach in Maui.

If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
I would be something like “Clockwoman”. My superpower would be the ability to add more hours to the day! I’d definitely have a red cape too.

Any celebrity crushes?
No. But I once had a crush on my next door neighbor. Then one day he baked me cookies. We’ve now been married for 5 years!

Favorite Holiday?
Christmas

If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
I would be a bright pink Converse sneaker. Fun, stylish, and unpretentious.

What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
I wish I could have my own cooking show on the Food Network. It would be dedicated to vegetarian cuisine, peanut butter, and chocolate.

Favorite piece of clothing?
Any of my husband’s t-shirts. They make great pajamas.

There are just a couple more months left in 2007. Any exciting plans for the rest of the year?
Preparing for the arrival of our first child. It’s exciting and a little scary at the same time. But decorating a nursery is a lot of fun.

Well, Nancy, you do have exciting plans for the rest of 2007! Congratulations!

Trippin’!

So, for those of you that didn’t know already…

I’ve packed up and moved from Hawaii.  I’m now in San Francisco and am starting a new journey with the hubby.  We’re looking for a place to live in the city (hopefully) and will be following up our few days here with a road trip.  I’ll keep you posted as much as I can.

Now you know why the posts haven’t been as frequent and why I even missed my Halloween feature (I’m sad…).  If you’ve sent me emails and I haven’t responded right away I appreciate your patience.  I’m trying to get back to everyone whenever I have a chance and where I can find a wireless signal.

I hope that your Halloween went well and that you all had fun.  Happy November!!!
