Sweet!

I adore these precious letterpress cards for babies and children by Sweetbeets. Lisa Zuraw started this company after the birth of her first child a few years ago. She was in search of a unique birth announcement and couldn’t quite find the right one. Drawing on her observations of her children at play along with the memories of her own childhood, her greeting cards were born. Images that capture the magic of being young are found at Sweetbeets.

I’m Still Here…

Sorry for the week that I was M.I.A., guys. I have been busy at work on a couple of things including going to my day jobs. First, I just reopened Punk-n-Pie after our move and family affairs that I mentioned earlier. There are tons of things on sale, so help us make some space in our tiny place for more items. There’s also a bunch of amazing new clothing pieces added as well. Check it out:

Camp Flannel in Baby Blue: $36.00; White Tie Top: $24.00:

I’m also working on putting together a Goodies Galore Giveaway for Mixed Plate. If you haven’t signed up for our newsletter yet, please do. That will be your chance to win a box full of handmade items. If you’re a business owner wanting a way to advertise you can email me (liana@mixedplateblog.com) and send your donation in. I’ve got an ad in N.E.E.T. Magazine coming up and donations are due soon.

Something else that’s going on is my jewelry site is getting a makeover. So, be on the lookout for the new On a Friday (I’ll let you know when).

So, enough of the shameless plugs. Where was I last weekend? I was taking pictures of boys! Oh, not like that. The husband and I rented a car and drove from San Francisco to Santa Barbara to watch a stage of the Amgen Tour of California. It was a crazy trip but the adventure was totally worth it! We got cowbells, a foam finger and yelled and cheered like crazy. It was awesome. Here’s the proof:

I’m Drawn To…

Dogs. I love dogs. LOVE. I’m more of a big-dog-type-a-gal and my favorites are definitely Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Weimaraners…oh, who am I kidding. I really love too many doggies to list them all. There’s just something that makes me smile and get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside whenever I see dogs and so I thought I’d share some amazing artwork I found on Etsy featuring them. Enjoy…

Work Mail?

Sure, it looks like your regular ol’ inter-office envelope. You know, the kind that means there’s work coming your way. But, wait…it’s so much better than what you think. This is the newest design by Diana over at Wonder Threads and it holds your beautiful MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. How fun are these laptop sleeves. Made of poly microfiber with a fuzzy neoprene lining, secure velcro closure and red tabs for the full effect, this sleeve will ward off anyone thinking of touching your precious MacBook. I mean, who really wants to snag your inter-office work mail, right?

Laptop Sleeves: $62.00 - $72.00 (depending on type):

Just Peachy!

Peachypan is a business that began after its owner, Fee, discovered the world of tsumami kanzashi (hair accessories made of ‘pinched’ fabric) during a year living abroad in Japan. Thank goodness for that amazing year because she has created a fun little world of handmade accessories and specializes in, of course, tsumami kanzashi. Check it out…

LilyMoon

It is not uncommon for me to find a shop full of things that I’d like to share with you. It is also not a rare thing that I stumble upon an artist that has a shop where I really adore everything in it. LilyMoon is one of those places where I tell myself, “Just choose a couple of things to share with your readers. Save some for them to discover when they visit the site.” Easier said than done.

Anywho, here are a few of my choosings for you to enjoy. For more info check out LilyMoon’s blog for the stories behind the artwork.

Get To Know: Lorena Paola of Lolo’s

Let’s get to know another great crafter…

Lorena

Meet Lorena Paola of Lolo’s:

Name: Lorena Paola

Business Name: Lolo’s

Where are you located?
Gainesville, Fl

What is it that you design and create?
I try to design and create beautiful and weird things all the time. I design bags and purses, costumes and masks for theatre and Halloween,( I write and choreograph my own plays ), jewelry ( specially beadwork ), home décor (I graduated as an Interior Designer in my native Chile) like pillows, table runners, place mats, bean bags, stained glass etc , etc. So you can see why people call me multi-faceted (is that a disease? lol!)

And then there is Sculpture, which is also a passion of mine although my sculpture in fact is a convergence of all my interests since it incorporates story-telling, theatrical assemblages and sort of set and character design.

What is your favorite part of the design process?
The beginning, the middle and the end part. I like to enjoy every moment during the process including the hard part when you find there is a problem and you have figure out how to fix it.

How did you come up with your business name?
I just thought in my nickname that I got since I was a baby (Lolo without the s. I hated to put the ‘s’ because somebody else already used it, I could not believe it! ).

Where/How did this all begin?
As far as I can remember I’ve been dancing, choreographing and creating things and involved in school performances. Then in Germany about 12 years ago I met my husband and we started doing theater, films, puppetry and all came back to me like an avalanche. We moved to the States and started teaching (and studying) theater and I concentrated more on costumes, masks and sculpture and began writing my own plays. Along all of this I fell in love with beading, which I’ve been doing for 5 years now and now we have a small studio that we really want to take off!

Who or what inspires you?
Nature, nightmares, my lovely husband and daughter who are incredibly patient with my craziness, good and bad moments (which I chose to turn into art instead of depression☺), music, magazines, books, stories I hear, etc, etc. Everything that it is and I have around me.

What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
To have a lot of passion. To give, all the time, the best that we have to improve this world right now for the next generation. In other words, be a conscious artist, aware of the importance and impact of what and how you design. Question yourself if the materials and the sources you utilize do in fact, create a net-worth value from an ethical/environmental point of view. Needless to say, this is a tall proposition in this materialistic world, but we can take little steps and together we can definitely make a difference and change things, wheeew!

What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Well, my favorite is going to my country’s little towns, getting to know the artisans and buy things that give me a warm feeling, where you can really see the touch of their hands, almost like a direct connection to a completely different world. Since I also go to craft fairs to exhibit I like to buy from my fellow starving artists ahaha! I have yet to buy indie online, I am getting familiar with some great artists though.

What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
I have a great variety of music. Some of them in Spanish, English, Italian, German etc. From classic oldies (Platters, Los Panchos, Olga Guillot, Elvis etc) to modern rock, techno and specially latin rock.

What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on? I don’t watch a lot of television because I am busy all the time, but when I have some free time I try to watch funny series that make me laugh and also I really like to watch the British series on PBS.

What was the last movie you watched?
Elizabeth, The Golden Age. The fabric and the costumes that they made for the film were beautiful.

What’s your favorite food?
Something from my country (Porotos Granados). It is a delicious food that you won’t forget it if you try it.

What’s your favorite candy?
Gomitas (that would be something like gummys)

Coffee or Tea?
Earl Grey Tea

What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Fabrics stores, Flea Markets, Antiques stores, Bead Stores, Craft Stores.

Any pets?
Two wonderful cats, Coqui (a giant cat) and Duquesa, a wild one)

Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
Europe, specially Italy. It is a marvelous place to visit or to live.

If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
The Super Lolo girl and the powers are to give the people more imagination to create a better world.

Any celebrity crushes?
A lot, not only from the present time, also from the past. But I had to decide on one, and that was my husband, who is also a celebrity! ☺

Favorite Holiday?
Christmas Time.

If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
An Italian shoe, they are really soft, elegant, comfortable and the leather is just fantastic!.

What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
To improve my techniques to make more beautiful and weird things. To win an Oscar for acting! OK, I would settle for Cannes.

Favorite piece of clothing?
Shoes

Do you speak any other languages?
If not, would you like to learn one? I speak four languages: Spanish, English, German, Italian.

It’s 2008 already! Oh yes, so soon. What are your plans for the year?
To learn more about how to work with different kinds of materials. To have enough time to keep doing what I really love and trust. And also enjoying living in this complicated world with the people that I really love.

Thank you so much, Lorena. You have provided Mixed Plate’s readers with yet another wonderfully informative look at a truly creative mind!

Karen Cole Paper

A few weeks ago Karen Bullard contacted me about her company, Karen Cole Paper. I was so delighted when I received a bunch of samples in my mailbox of note cards and invitations that I knew I had to feature her shop.

While staying at home with her children, Karen started Karen Cole Paper in 2004 with just 20 designs after feeling the need to express her artistic side. Her paper products can now be found in stores nationwide.

Yellow Piece Folded Card (2): $12.00/set of 10:

Yellow Piece Folded Card (2)

All of the images are hand-drawn, original colored pencil illustrations and are professionally printed onto the highest quality paper. I actually thought that the cards I received were drawn individually - that’s how nice the print job is! There’s a variety of designs for any occasion you have from weddings to birth announcements and everyday cards and imprintables. The designs are fresh and fun and give a little bit of style to your events.

For Sure, the LAST and FINAL V-Day Post…

Seriously. No jokes, it’s the last. I just wanted to hold out until this gift was opened to share this with you. I know I said we don’t normally celebrate Valentine’s Day, but I couldn’t resist a little something anyway for the husband. I got an adorable little card with a doggie on the front to go along with this:

Shout It Out Love Mugs

Yup, got it custom made by DolaMakes. I asked Lola to take the Shout It Out Love Hand Painted Dish Set design and create some mugs for me. She and Don did an amazing job and they turned out beautifully. After moving and settling in we realized that we didn’t have anything for our coffee or tea. I was able to stall and hold the hubby off on purchasing any since I had something special in mind. Do you love them? Check out the other hand-painted wares at DolaMakes for gift ideas.

Last Valentine’s Day Post (kind of)…

I don’t know if this is wrong or not, but I can’t help it. I love Adam Sandler and this is from one of my favorite movies EVER (The Wedding Singer). You know, a little something for those of us that aren’t into the whole February 14th deal…
