Get To Know: Brittni Wood of Paper N Stitch

It’s that time again. Time to learn about a Mixed Plate sponsor. Enjoy…

Meet Brittni Wood of Paper N Stitch:

Name: Brittni Wood

Business Name: Paper N Stitch

Where are you located? I live in Jacksonville, FL.

What is Paper N Stitch?
The Paper N Stitch blog is Phase I. It features artists, makers, crafters, and indie labels. But I didn’t want to stop there, so I decided to include other inspirations: DIY tutorials, design, style, and home. The blog is updated with new posts 3-5 times a day.

Phase II for Paper N Stitch is a comprehensive website that will allow users to upload their own information and start promoting their work. The site will include plenty of features and offer something unique for buyers and sellers. The blog will of course continue in conjunction with the site. The Paper N Stitch website launch in October of 2008.

What is your favorite part of the process?
My favorite part is discovering talented artists, designers, makers, and crafters. When I come across someone’s work that I have never seen before, I get so excited. And I am just as excited to share this with others, in hopes of inspiring someone else.

How did you come up with your business name?
The name was something that I felt was really important, so after coming up with five or so possible names, I narrowed it down to two. Ultimately, I decided to go with Paper N Stitch because I thought it best described the concept of the site and blog. Paper represents art and artists that are featured, while Stitch represents the handmade, craft, and maker features.

Where/How did this all begin?
As an artist myself, I felt I was always struggling to get my work seen, but everything I did just didn’t seem to be enough. I had a website and a shop, but needed an extra boost. I thought, if I was having this trouble, there most be others with the same issue. So, almost two years ago I started an online magazine called CREATEjacksonville, which promoted artists and makers in and around the Jacksonville area.
After four issues, I decided to pull the plug. I needed to regroup and expand my idea into something bigger. I wanted to come up with a way to bring artists, designers, and crafters together internationally and promote them all in the same place, but at the time, I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it.
Eventually, I came up with Paper N Stitch and have been overwhelmed with the response I have received so far. I never dreamed of the success that the blog would have so quickly and I hope that success continues when the site launches.

Who or what inspires you?
In my personal life and artwork, I am constantly inspired by the work of other artists, especially the work of Kelly Lynn Jones and Margaret Kilgallen. As far as Paper N Stitch is concerned, I am inspired by other sites and blogs with a great sense of style and design. Some of my favorites are Swiss Miss, FFFFound!, and The Style Files.

What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
This is a tie between my Made by Hank purse and my Hawt print from Argyle Whale. Both of them are recent purchases and I couldn’t be happier with the service and products I received.

What’s your favorite candy?
This is probably the toughest question I could be asked because I have a very deep love for candy. Very deep. If I had to choose, I would say my favorite candy is Strawberry Sour Punch Straws.

Coffee or Tea?
Without a doubt, I am tea girl. I have talked about this several times on my blog, and surprisingly there are more tea drinkers out there than I would have suspected. I love the smell of coffee beans, but just can’t bring myself to drink it.

Any pets?
I have two lovely and adorable pets. I am so in love with both of them and feel so lucky to have them in my life. My dog, Luna, is the first dog I have ever had and she is now three years old. Nuggs, is my cat and he is a bit older and wiser. ☺

Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
My favorite place to visit is California. I was born in Stockton and lived there as a child. Often times, I miss it and go back to visit family whenever I can.

Any celebrity crushes?
Oh man. I am going to have to go with Seth Rogen. A sense of humor is number one in my book.

We’re more than half way through 2008 already! Oh yes, so soon. What are your plans for the year?
For the rest of the year, I plan on continuing to expand Paper N Stitch. I hope to be able to include many more tutorials and How To’s on the weekly basis, as well as shop and studio tours.
Also, the Paper N Stitch website component will be up and running officially in October. I will begin inviting artists, designers, and crafters to participate in mid-September. The first month will be invitation only, but I encourage anyone who is interested to submit their work by emailing me at papernstitch@gmail.com.

Thanks, Brittni. Can’t wait to see the new website! For now, here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come…
