My taste is always changing. When I was younger, I doubt I thought chandeliers were great. I probably thought they were big and old. But now I just find a lot of them to be beautiful and romantic. Maybe even a way to set certain moods in your space. It was nice to have stumbled upon Sheri’s Crystal Designs, where each of the lighting and accessory pieces are one-of-a-kind works of art using vintage as well as modern components as well as some antique parts. She also accepts custom orders so that you can get just the mood lighting you’re looking for.

When I saw this posted online, I was pretty excited. Tomorrow, 09/09/09, at 9:09 am Pacific time {which will be Noon:09 Eastern} these prints will go sale:

The edition is titled “The Scarlet Lettering” and features work from artists Marian Bantjes, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Ray Fenwick, Ray Frenden, Linzie Hunter, Nate Williams, and David Huyck {mastermind behind Cloudy Collection}. Oooh, so many favorites all at once!
These amazing prints are said to be pretty fancy stuff. They include a blind deboss layer {no color in the ink, so there’s an impression but it’s subtle}, and to help the visibility of that layer, it’s printed onto a 2-ply paper, so it’s double-thick. The pieces were printed at {and photographed by} the fabulous Boxcar Press. Check out Cloudy Collection tomorrow to purchase your prints. I’m setting my reminder alarm.

Raise your hand if you have an iPhone, Blackberry, etc. Seems like most of us have some sort of smart phone device where we can access email, surf the web, and have instant access to any information we crave. For example, you can read the news online if you choose not to buy an actual newspaper. Many magazines have even, to my deep sadness, stopped having a hard copy available.
So of course I was excited to see a fresh magazine from Hawaii {sweet!} emerge recently. While technology is wonderful, I still love print. I love the way paper feels in your hands, the way magazines, notepads and books are bound, how the images and type appear up close, and just knowing that it’s something tangible.

Contrast Magazine has brought that feeling back for me. Started in the summer of 2008 by a group of friends, the publication offers up something for everyone. With backgrounds ranging in pro surfing, photography and fashion, the mag mirrors the melting pot feel of Hawaii. It’s a mix of music, art, sports, clothing trends, skateboarding, surfing and more and is an essential guide for island lifestyle junkies.
Contrast’s crew all were born and raised in Hawaii and three of them graduated together from Kamehameha High School {which makes me so proud}. Even more impressive is that the young staff ranges in age from 24 – 34. I have a new favorite magazine, not simply because we all call Hawaii “home”, but because their approach is refreshing and you can tell there is much aloha behind the grass roots production.

Be sure to check out Contrast Magazine’s blog for daily updates and follow them on Twitter to keep up with current happenings {especially if you live in Hawaii}. The next issue should drop soon, so keep an eye out for that as well. Long live print!

Have you ever taken a piece of thread or string and tied it around your finger so that you would remember something? I really want to know if anyone’s done this because I have never tried it. Does it work? I have little notes to myself everywhere and still sometimes forget to do things. Something I’ve forgotten before is my lunch. I pack it up and if I’m rushing to get somewhere will realize once I’m on the bus or too far to walk back that my yogurt or sandwich is sitting on my kitchen counter. Miss Natalie has the solution for us…

I often talk about how it’s the little things in life that mean so much to me. To all of us, I’m sure. If you saw my tweet {follow MP, please} from Tuesday, you may have seen how the way my sandwich was wrapped made me happy. I bought a simple tuna sandwich that was wrapped in standard parchment paper. But it was the way that the paper folded in and tucked shut and in place that made me smile. I unwrapped my sammy, rewrapped it, unwrapped it again and then ate it. Maybe I’m crazy, and that’s fine with me. It may seem silly, but it’s the small things that make me giddy. Such as these printable pieces of art by The Small Joys…
