Over this past holiday season {previous ones as well} I did my shopping from only small businesses. Everyone got things from me from shops that were local or independently owned. One of my favorite shops for getting unique gift items is Limonaia.
Located in Russian Hill here in San Francisco, owner Jessica Goldfarb has curated a selection of goods from both local and international companies fit for any occasion and recipient. Most recently I picked up a vase and candle for my mom, a fabric pouch for my sister, and a memory card game, drawing books and bath treats for my nieces and nephews. Oh, and there may have been a little something for myself thrown in there as well. The shop is great because it fits any budget.
Stop on by and see Jessica and her friendly staff. They are all very helpful and knowledgeable about the lines they carry in the shop. Some of my current favorites are the fabric headbands and ponytail holders made locally {which I own}, paper products, candles, soaps, and well, just about everything I guess. My friend actually just gave me the cutest wristlet/clutch from Limonaia recently as well. I’m also kind of obsessed with the blabla dolls {hey, I’m a big kid, right?!}…

I’ll start this post with an apology. I really do hope that I do not offend anyone who will be hitting malls or stores with huge sales. I know people that do this and it’s fine by me if that’s their {or your thing}. For me, getting in line the night before or at midnight for the famous day after Thanksgiving sales is just not my idea of fun. I can’t deal with the crowds and there really isn’t anything I need or want that badly anyway. I understand that maybe if I had children the story would be different. Anyway, the kind of shopping I would be up for is the kind where I could shop indie and be in my pajamas as I’m saving. I met Chrissy of Boh Bon Soap Company this weekend! She was great and I picked up three bars of deliciously scented soaps. I’ve purchased from her before and loved them. My skin is very sensitive and doesn’t appreciate when I use things that aren’t natural or have too much scent to them. While the bars are scented, Chrissy uses pure essential oils which are absolutely friendly to both my skin and sense of smell. I chose two that I’d tried in the past {Spearmint and Eucalyptus and Lavender Rosemary} and a newer one {Tangerine Pomegranate & White Tea} that I can’t wait to use.

Ever feel like having a spa day? Just for yourself. No work. No cell phone. No email. No “other half”. Just you. You in the hands of the spa. What service would you choose from the menu? Mani/pedi, massage, facial? I am not going to lie. My dream {some day} is to have it all. I want to submit to the half {perhaps full} day at a spa where I am pampered like never before. Working with new ingredients, creating new recipes and seeing how the new creations come out.
How did you come up with your business name?
My sister and I were in Chicago, drinking blue margaritas on a ridiculously hot summer night a few years back. She was about to begin her venture into opening a business of her own and we were discussing what the future might hold. She had chosen the name “Hob Nob†for her business, Hob Nob being a nod to the corner grocery store our Grandfather owned in our youth. I joked that when I started my soap shop, I would name it “Boh Bon†(Hob Nob backwards) and we would both pay homage to Gramps. Three years later the soap was made and the name just stuck.
Who or what inspires you?
Nature, travel, friends, family…
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Don’t give up.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Although technically not a purchase or trade, I have a drawing of a favorite spot in Lisbon, Portugal a friend made for me which I love and is very sentimental to me.

Marlese Sears of Canada-based Bobe Bath Essentials shot me an email a couple weeks back asking if I’d be open to trying a product or two. I knew via perusing the website that this company really cared about the products they created. I selected to try the Soy Fabulous Whipped Body Butter and a Lip Balm…and I am really glad that I did.
Since I received my sample pack, I’ve been faithfully puckering up with my Carnival Candy Apple Lip Balm (I’m a lip balm/gloss person so this made me happy). The balm is smooth and you get just the right amount of scent without being overpowering. As for my yummy Grapefruit Supreme Soy Fabulous Whipped Body Butter…citrus heaven! I am always a bit hesitant when it comes to using anything with too much fragrance. However, after applying some of the body butter I was hooked. The formula is light enough for me to use in Hawaii yet gave me a nice smooth skin surface that I would bet would work in colder, drier weather.
