Let’s get to know another great crafter…

Meet Lorena Paola of Lolo’s:
Name: Lorena Paola
Business Name: Lolo’s
Where are you located?
Gainesville, Fl
What is it that you design and create?
I try to design and create beautiful and weird things all the time. I design bags and purses, costumes and masks for theatre and Halloween,( I write and choreograph my own plays ), jewelry ( specially beadwork ), home décor (I graduated as an Interior Designer in my native Chile) like pillows, table runners, place mats, bean bags, stained glass etc , etc. So you can see why people call me multi-faceted (is that a disease? lol!)
And then there is Sculpture, which is also a passion of mine although my sculpture in fact is a convergence of all my interests since it incorporates story-telling, theatrical assemblages and sort of set and character design.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
The beginning, the middle and the end part. I like to enjoy every moment during the process including the hard part when you find there is a problem and you have figure out how to fix it.
How did you come up with your business name?
I just thought in my nickname that I got since I was a baby (Lolo without the s. I hated to put the ‘s’ because somebody else already used it, I could not believe it! ).
Where/How did this all begin?
As far as I can remember I’ve been dancing, choreographing and creating things and involved in school performances. Then in Germany about 12 years ago I met my husband and we started doing theater, films, puppetry and all came back to me like an avalanche. We moved to the States and started teaching (and studying) theater and I concentrated more on costumes, masks and sculpture and began writing my own plays. Along all of this I fell in love with beading, which I’ve been doing for 5 years now and now we have a small studio that we really want to take off!
Who or what inspires you?
Nature, nightmares, my lovely husband and daughter who are incredibly patient with my craziness, good and bad moments (which I chose to turn into art instead of depression☺), music, magazines, books, stories I hear, etc, etc. Everything that it is and I have around me.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
To have a lot of passion. To give, all the time, the best that we have to improve this world right now for the next generation. In other words, be a conscious artist, aware of the importance and impact of what and how you design. Question yourself if the materials and the sources you utilize do in fact, create a net-worth value from an ethical/environmental point of view. Needless to say, this is a tall proposition in this materialistic world, but we can take little steps and together we can definitely make a difference and change things, wheeew!
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Well, my favorite is going to my country’s little towns, getting to know the artisans and buy things that give me a warm feeling, where you can really see the touch of their hands, almost like a direct connection to a completely different world. Since I also go to craft fairs to exhibit I like to buy from my fellow starving artists ahaha! I have yet to buy indie online, I am getting familiar with some great artists though.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
I have a great variety of music. Some of them in Spanish, English, Italian, German etc. From classic oldies (Platters, Los Panchos, Olga Guillot, Elvis etc) to modern rock, techno and specially latin rock.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on? I don’t watch a lot of television because I am busy all the time, but when I have some free time I try to watch funny series that make me laugh and also I really like to watch the British series on PBS.
What was the last movie you watched?
Elizabeth, The Golden Age. The fabric and the costumes that they made for the film were beautiful.
What’s your favorite food?
Something from my country (Porotos Granados). It is a delicious food that you won’t forget it if you try it.
What’s your favorite candy?
Gomitas (that would be something like gummys)
Coffee or Tea?
Earl Grey Tea
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Fabrics stores, Flea Markets, Antiques stores, Bead Stores, Craft Stores.

Two wonderful cats, Coqui (a giant cat) and Duquesa, a wild one)

Europe, specially Italy. It is a marvelous place to visit or to live.
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
The Super Lolo girl and the powers are to give the people more imagination to create a better world.
Any celebrity crushes?
A lot, not only from the present time, also from the past. But I had to decide on one, and that was my husband, who is also a celebrity! ☺
Favorite Holiday?
Christmas Time.
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
An Italian shoe, they are really soft, elegant, comfortable and the leather is just fantastic!.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
To improve my techniques to make more beautiful and weird things. To win an Oscar for acting! OK, I would settle for Cannes.
Favorite piece of clothing?
Shoes
Do you speak any other languages?
If not, would you like to learn one? I speak four languages: Spanish, English, German, Italian.
It’s 2008 already! Oh yes, so soon. What are your plans for the year?
To learn more about how to work with different kinds of materials. To have enough time to keep doing what I really love and trust. And also enjoying living in this complicated world with the people that I really love.

Meet Brooke Fuller of The Pear Project:
Name: Brooke Fuller
Business Name: The Pear Project
Where are you located?
Coastal North Carolina
What is it that you design and create?
I am a photographer by trade, also trained in printmaking. I design resin necklaces from my photographs, sell prints, work with tin & enamel, create felted wall art…I’m always looking to expand my skills and create new items. In my shop I sell works from a variety of artists. I would describe the design of the items we sell as simple & modern.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
My favorite part of the design process is research. I love searching for obscure supplies, and reading up on new techniques. I got my first degree in History so I am a researcher at heart.
How did you come up with your business name?
I wanted a business name that would signify my career journey. I chose the word pear because my maiden name is Parrish and made it a project to symbolize the ongoing, changing nature of my business and career.
Where/How did this all begin?
The Pear Project is a new online shop dedicated to finding unique artisan goods for everyday life. It is a project that founder I have had in the works for several years now. Artisan goods for everyday life is about buying, and enjoying simple handmade items. A purse can come from a department store, or you can buy something unique that was made in a small quantity. Not only do you have a gorgeous bag, but you are also supporting an independent artist or crafts person who is making a career out of what they love.
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by artists of all kinds. I love going into unique shops in little towns to see what people are creating and selling. Once I create an item I love to sell it or give it as a gift.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
I have been selling my art since I was 16 and started writing zines. Research is the most important way to success. My first serious venture was a zine distro. I learned from that experience that it takes awhile to build up a reputation, and if you are patient and consistent then success will come.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
I love buying letterpress greeting cards from a variety of artists. I love the feel of the paper, and simple designs. It’s one art that I have not had a chance to master, but am fascinated by.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
I am still in love with my lime green iPod mini from a few years back. Right now I’m loving a Damien Rice cd that a friend recommended. There are some great sad songs in there that are perfect for winter.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
I’m not much of a TV watcher, but I love to rent quirky documentaries from Netflix. My favorite is The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.
What was the last movie you watched?
The last movie I watched was The March of the Penguins with my Grandfather over Thanksgiving. He came and stayed with me for a week in my new house. It reminded me of all the movies we used to watch together on Saturday mornings when I was a child.
What’s your favorite food?
I am in love with berries of all kinds. I think I could live off of Kashi cereal and blueberries for the rest of my life! My favorite things to eat out are sushi and there is this great veggie pita at Pita Delite that I’m addicted to as well.
What’s your favorite candy?
I love fresh chocolate from little candy shops you find in cute downtown’s.
Coffee or Tea?
Neither. I do like Diet Coke for a caffeine fix though.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
There is a store in downtown Wilmington, NC called Edge of Urge that is jam packed with unique items. I could spend a whole day in there and still find new items tucked away in there.
Any pets?
I have 2 cats that are best friends along with a tank of African Chiclids (fish) & a Koi Pond in my backyard that started out with 2 koi that came with the house when we bought it and then they had a dozen babies! Nature is a pretty amazing thing. I have also been known to feed a stray cat from time to time.
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
My favorite place in the world is Bangkok, Thailand. I went there for my honeymoon in October and had an amazing time. There are so many markets to explore, and everything is specialized and handmade. There’s no place for one stop shopping like that. It was fun to taste new fruits and vegetables that I didn’t even know existed, and meet people traveling from all over the world.
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
This is a hard question! I don’t know that I’d want to be a superhero. I’d rather be behind the scenes doing PR ;)
Any celebrity crushes?
I don’t have any celebrity crushes at the moment, but I will admit to a slight Brad Pitt obsession as a teenager.
Favorite Holiday?
I love Valentine’s Day. I know this may be a controversial choice, but hear me out. I love it because it’s quiet and you can have private moments with people you love. Big holiday’s like Christmas are great, but there are so many things to do and people to see that they just whizz by. A good romantic dinner out and conversation over a bottle of wine is definitely one of my favorite things.
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
I’m clumsy so I know I wouldn’t be a high heel! If I were a shoe I would be pink for sure, and custom made to fit my owner perfectly. I would be made of soft leather, and be simple but sexy.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
Secretly I wish I was a glassblower. But realistically I know that I don’t like to get sweaty!
Favorite piece of clothing?
My current favorite pieces of clothing are my pink sneakers that I wore under my wedding dress.
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
I know a little French & I’d love to learn more.
We’re now in 2008. Any plans for the year?
I’m busy working on my sketch book with ideas for the year. A big project in the works are some glass pendants with some of my new photographs that I took in Bangkok, and more enameled works. The kiln makes the studio warm and toasty for winter!
Thank you so much, Brooke. I’m sure you’ve now got a lot of us thinking about visiting Bangkok!

Business Name: Bijougirl Designs
Where are you located?
Nashville, TN
What is it that you design and create?
Handmade silver and gold jewelry using metalworking techniques.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
I could say the idea part or the labor part but if I’m supposed to be honest, I’ll have to say completion of a great piece of jewelry!
How did you come up with your business name?
“Bijou” means “An intricately designed piece of delicate workmanship” which I think describes my style of jewelry pretty well.
Where/How did this all begin?
I began making jewelry as a side thing while I was in college for fine art. I started a family shortly after that and jewelry making just seemed to fit in with my lifestyle, not to mention I fell in love with it.
Who or what inspires you?
God, my artist husband, my three kids and nature are some of the places where I find inspiration.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Don’t pay too much attention to what other artists are doing that you’re not. Just do what you do, and do it your best.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
My husband and I have made a lot of art trades and it is really hard to pick a favorite because I love them all, but I will plug a couple who have websites: artwork from www.davidarms.com and lighting from www.arcborn.com.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
Brooke Waggonner, Radiohead, Kate Nash, Patti Griffin, David Bowie.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
If it weren’t for the writer’s strike, I’d be watching The Office. I have been keeping up with Project Runway and am anxiously awaiting Lost on the 31st.
What was the last movie you watched?
The Waitress
What’s your favorite food?
Mmmm…sushi.
What’s your favorite candy?
York peppermint patties
Coffee or Tea?
Both, but if I had to choose one I’d pick coffee.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Home Depot

Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
My husband and I attend an arts conference in Ukraine where I learned a lot from a master silversmith in Kiev. That was definitely one of my favorite trips. I also enjoy visiting my friend in Vail for some skiing.
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpower?
I always liked Wonderwoman and wished that I would look like Linda Carter when I grew up.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
When I was a kid I secretly wished that I was a trapeze artist and then I would go to school and bust out some super cool moves on the playground. Now, I think I am happy just being a wife, mom and jewelry designer.
Favorite piece of clothing?
My Lucky Brand jeans
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
Ummm…does Pig Latin count? Or Baby Talk?
It’s 2008 already! Oh yes, so soon. What are your plans for the year?

Here’s a chance to find out more about one of our sponsors.

Meet Michelle Harvey of Michabella Creations:
Name: Michelle Harvey
Business Name: Michabella Creations
Where are you located?
Lebanon, Pennsylvania
What is it you design and create?
Jewelry that is both fun and elegant. I use genuine Swarovski crystals, semi-precious gemstones, silver, brass, and glass in my designs. I try to keep the quality high and the prices affordable.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
Finding a new pendant or beads and then seeing a creation come about. Having someone let you know they just love the piece is truly the best part!
How did you come up with your business name?
I combined my name with Bella, which means beautiful. I wanted something unique!
Where/how did this all begin?
I have always been a creative person, but after having my daughter and being a stay-at-home mom, I kind of lost myself. After about a year of focusing solely on her, I started considering making jewelry. I started small and inexpensively until I learned how to make it and and to see if anyone would actually be interested in my pieces. After selling most of my inventory and making custom pieces, I had some pocket money for myself! I then became acquainted with my future business partner, who had been making cancer bracelets for charity. She introduced me to new techniques and after a few craft shows, we decided we wanted to make this a business and introduce ourselves to the web. We launched our first site last March and just recently re-designed it in November.
Who or what inspires you?
My mom, grandmother, and daughter. Also the season and nature.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Prepare yourself to work hard! I didn’t realize that most of my time would be spent marketing my site, and not as much making jewelry! Know what your vision is and don’t give up on it!
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
Besides children’s music, I have a varied taste. My favorites are Gwen Stefani, Maroon 5, Daughtry, Frank Sinatra, and 80′s music.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
Sometimes I love to just veg out in front of the t.v.! I do like a lot of reality shows. My absolute favorites are Project Runway, Survivor, House, and pretty much anything on the Food Network!
What was the last movie you watched?
Garfield, my daughter insists on it everyday!
What’s your favorite food?
I happen to love food, but I’ll have to say Asian food.
What’s your favorite candy?
Fruity Twizzlers
Coffee or tea?
I wouldn’t start a day without Coffee!
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Well, I don’t walk around any store for hours any more, but if I had a chance it would be Barnes & Noble and Sephora! I just love make-up!
Any pets?
A cat and dog.
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
I love to go to the beach at least once a year. There are so many placed I’d love to visit, Ireland and Belgium.
Favorite Holiday?
Christmas
Favorite piece of clothing?
Sadly, I now pretty much live in sweat pants and T-shirts. I like to be comfy while running around with my 2 1/2 year old!
It’s 2008 already! Oh yes, so soon. What are your plans for the year?
To enjoy my daughter as much as I can. To see my business grow. To get back into shape.
Thanks so much, Michelle!

Now is your chance to learn more about a fabulous duo…

Meet Vivian Cheng and Eric Jean-Louis of Blend Creations:
Name: Vivian Cheng and Eric Jean-Louis
Business Name: Blend Creations
Where are you located?
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; the capital of Canada.
What is it that you design and create?
We design and make stainless steel jewelry and a small line of paper goods.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
We always have a number of designs on the go that are anywhere from the ‘in your head’ stage, to the rough-sketch stage to finally a production drawing that’s made before we prototype, but by far, the most satisfying part of the design process is getting to the prototyping stage. Where the design is resolved enough to be a tangible object, even if it has faults – it’s finally at the stage of being real.
How did you come up with your business name?
We wanted a name that reflected the two of us – while we share a lot of the same beliefs and philosophies, there are obvious differences between us: male/female, Asian/Caucasian, and even our design style. We wanted a word that made it apparent that it was the two of us ‘blending’ together.
Where/How did this all begin?
The idea of starting a company came on a cold, cold morning in February of 2005. We were running on the Rideau Canal (it was obviously frozen), and after some griping about work-related things, we were knocking around the idea of having our own design company. A few months later, we bought some ad space and that made us get in gear to meet the ad deadline.
Who or what inspires you?
When we’re in ‘design’ mode, it can be anything or anyone. A shape that has an interesting negative space could make for an interesting card graphic, seeing the leaves of a tree in the fall can spark the idea for our ‘foliage’ necklaces.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Beyond just making your product, spend some time learning how to promote yourself. We have yet to really master this, but it seems 90% of the business is the rest of the stuff that isn’t designing.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Oooh, tough one. We got some really lovely soaps from Mi-Spa and EB Candles. We’re kind of hooked on handmade soaps now that it’s hard to go back to the standard Ivory bar. Vivian really likes her mohop sandals in particular, and Eric has a “Woofman†from Cuddly Rigor Mortis.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
A lot of children’s music. Right now, there’s Raffi singing “Baby Belugaâ€. When it’s after our son’s bedtime, we play a lot of Jack Johnson, Johnny Cash and Eric has a secret obsession with playing Prozzak.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
Grey’s Anatomy. We don’t answer the phone on Thursday nights.
What was the last movie you watched?
The Bourne Ultimatum. (“Matt Damon!!!â€)
What’s your favorite food?
Oh, that’s hard. We both enjoy good food, so it probably depends on the time of day and what we’re in the mood for. Right now, just refer to the next question.
What’s your favorite candy?
Eric: Twizzlers, Vivian: Berry Blast Mike and Ike’s.
Coffee or Tea?
Yes. We’re coffee drinkers in the morning and tea drinkers at night.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
As parents of a young toddler, this concept seems to be a foreign one now (hours and hours of shopping?!). We’re pretty content though, to shop the Ikea or Home Depot, since there’s always something that the house needs.
Any pets?
We have rather large spiders in our yard, does that count?
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
Quebec City is always a nice getaway. It’s like being in Europe without the flight, and there’s some really, really good food there.
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
Eric: “I want to be Mr. Obvious. (The superpower would be obvious…)â€
Vivian: “I’d be The Eyeroller, Mr. Obvious’ sidekick. My power would have to be infinite patience.â€
Any celebrity crushes?
“Matt Damon!!!†(for both of us).
Favorite Holiday?
Festivus.
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
A horseshoe. For good luck.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
Spies with nifty cool gadgets.
Favorite piece of clothing?
Eric: “Jeans with no holes in themâ€.
Vivian: “Casual work clothes, aka pajamas. (I’m thinking we sound like really classy, worldly designers with this answer…).â€
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
Vivian speaks Cantonese and enough Spanish to travel Spain and get lost, and as a good Canadian kid, has enough understanding of the French language to nod at the right parts of a conversation. Eric speaks French fluently, and English without H’s.
Oh boy, it’s 2008. Yes, already. What are your plans for the year?
We’re going to sleep in some day. And party like it’s 1999.
I love getting to know our sponsors. Oh, and this time it was fun times two! Check out some of the current designs…

Let me introduce you to yet another wonderful sponsor and jewelry designer…

Meet Julie Ashton of StringofBlue:
Name: Julie Ashton
Business Name: StringofBlue
Where are you located?
The drought stricken state of Georgia, near Athens
What is it that you design and create?
I design and create a line of Modern Silver Jewelry that is all handmade by me in my studio.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
My favorite part is that “ah ha†moment…when you just sense that a design has all of the elements to make it work.
How did you come up with your business name?
Boy, that was really a struggle for me. I’m not sure…I don’t really like my given name especially because I share it with a famous porn star and I thought about what it might be like for a potential customer to google my name and the results might scare them off. So I wanted a name that was kind of evocative… a String of Blue just popped into my head, it had a “certain something†so I just went with it.
Where/How did this all begin?
Well, when I was a wee little one (okay not that little) lets say, pre-teen, at the hardware store that my Dad always dragged me to on the weekends, I would peruse the washers and ball chain and started making necklaces for me and my sister. Years later, desperate to adorn myself yet with little financial resources, I started to make my own jewelry.
Who or what inspires you?
I am infinitely inspired by strong, creative, stylish women. I’m continually inspired by the vast and amazing details that make up our Natural world. Lastly, I am inspired by and confused by, individuals that never give up, despite the odds.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Start small, stay true to your vision, keep your ego in check and keep forging forward. Its amazing how things will start to fall into place.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
I am always amazed by how many unique artists there are at Etsy, I have a long list of folks that I want to purchase from but right now, at the top of my list is Elsita ( Elsa Mora). I have a necklace I bought from Sharon of Nectar Jewelry that I’m really in love with at the moment.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
Just about everything, I have varied taste buds as far as music goes…lately its anything from Boards of Canada to Pacha Massive to Joseph Arthur…
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
Oh man, I love good TV! Colbert Report, No Reservations (Anthony Bourdains show), The Office, House MD…and too many others
What was the last movie you watched?
Blades of Glory… which I enjoyed thoroughly
What’s your favorite food?
Um…I don’t think I can nail that one down. Okay, maybe Sushi.
What’s your favorite candy?
A good, high quality chocolate bar always hits the spot.
Coffee or Tea?
I go through different phases with that…right now its coffee, but I love Chai.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Oh man, these are hard questions!…probably Powells Books in Portland…three city blocks worth of books. If you ever have the chance I highly recommend it.
Any pets?
No, I had a cat pass away recently and it broke my heart.
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
I grew up in California and I miss it tons…the northern coast especially. I would like to visit the California Coast back in time, before it became so overpopulated.
Any celebrity crushes?
More like character crushes…I love Jim from The Office
Favorite Holiday?
Halloween
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
A Converse for sure…
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
I’ve always wanted to be a National Geographic photographer.
Favorite piece of clothing?
A big buttoned vintage sweater I got on eBay years ago.
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
No, I studied French in HS but when I visited France the only thing I knew how to say was “I don’t speak Frenchâ€. I lived in Bali for a while, so I know a bit of Balinese.
We just said goodbye to 2007. Any exciting plans that you had towards the end of the year?
Nothing in particular, just to try and get outside more, now that the weathers a bit cooler here at this time of year…I have a hard time parting my jewelry bench though.
Thanks so much, Julie! Here are my favorites in her shop right now…
Silver Peace Teardrop Necklace: $49.00; Rainy Day Earrings: $37.00:

Modern Abstract Oval Bracelet: $48.00; Kyanite Chain Flowered Silver Briolette Necklace: $49.00;

Who or what inspires you?
Almost everything.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Well, I’m still just starting out myself…but I’d say: ask lots of questions and keep your chin up (it helps if all of your friends think you’re the most talented person they’ve ever met).

Meet Susan Gregg of ModCloth:
Name: Susan Gregg
Business Name: ModCloth
Where are you located?
Pittsburgh
How did you come up with your business name?
It was so long ago now I don’t really remember. I do know that we went through tons of ideas and different iterations – ModCloth just seemed to fit!
Where/How did this all begin?
I started ModCloth in the summer of 2002 (after I graduated high school and before I went to college). At that time, we only sold one of a kind vintage pieces and it was definitely more of a hobby than anything else. By 2005, as I was approaching graduation and starting to think about what I wanted to do with my life, some of my business professors convinced me to focus on ModCloth full-time. We started carrying indie designers along with the one of a kind vintage stuff and it’s grown from there. We’ve come so far but we have incredible plans for the future. Watch out!
Who or what inspires you?
Winston – my pug and ModCloth’s mascot. He’s just too cute.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
The Grey Album – a mash up of Jay-z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
I just started watching Weeds and I’m loving it. The whole ModCloth crew watches old episodes of Arrested Development and Kids in the Hall during lunch – they’re always funny.
What was the last movie you watched?
Roll Bounce. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn, New York.
Any pets?
The aforementioned Winston the pug and Blue the dachshund.
Any celebrity crushes?
I’m totally in love with Natalie Portman.
Favorite piece of clothing?
A vintage leopard-print coat from the ‘60s. My grandma gave it to me – it’s from her younger days and I really cherish it.
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
Yes! I studied German in college and lived there for a few months.

Another talented duo of sponsors that we should all get to know…

Meet Sanja and Alyse of Aelisheva:
Name: “Sanja” Zivka Jovanovic and Alyse Radenovic
Business Name: aelisheva
Where are you located?
Alyse: New Jersey, USA and Belgrade, Serbia
What is it that you design and create?
Alyse: Original artisan dresses
What is your favorite part of the design process?
Alyse: It’s all good
Sanja: Direct work with materials
How did you come up with your business name?
It was Alyse’s nickname, Sanja wanted to keep it.
Where/How did this all begin?
Alyse: I made dresses for personal use, then did decorative textiles, then a dress label by the same name, which was around a little bit in New York a long time ago, then I met Sanja in Belgrade, I worked with her in an extremely natural and fruitful way from the very beginning, it had and has a fated quality, I am very pleased with our product.
Sanja: From my early years I mainly played alone with my stepmother’s beautiful dresses and scarves, I lived with my father and my stepmother, she sewed at home – they were master artists, a Capricorn and a Pisces. At that time in Paris where I grew up, I loved all fairytales (about princes and princesses). When I was 15 years old I sewed a dress for myself by hand because I did not have a sewing machine, I knew how to sew instinctively. Working with a partner began with Alyse, I had never had a partner, it happened at the right time for me, because I had already had enough working and technical experience, and I wished for a liberated and unrestricted work, I graduated in fashion design in Paris, I work in the theatre and I have worked on numerous films (like in my fairytales), when I began work with Alyse I immediately understood what must be done and that encouraged me, for the first time I was not afraid, simply occupied with a natural feeling of satisfaction, and I do not worry even a little about the future because there is no need, simply I know that it is good and that it will be good.
Who or what inspires you?
Alyse: I am so accustomed to this that by this point it’s more or less automatic.
Sanja: Because I am an Earth sign all things from nature inspire me, I see inspiration everywhere, in buildings, in the country, in sunny days and in rainy days, with every step, in the dear people I love – in Love.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Alyse: Aelisheva. We really do offer very well-made pieces for an extremely reasonable price; our pieces are a nice balance of unusual and wearable; and the style is signature and I think highly distinctive – but our catalogue on the website explains all of that with pictures in a way that can’t be done here with words.

Meet Nancy Veltri of Modern Art Everyday:
Name: Nancy Veltri
Business Name: Modern Art Everyday
Where are you located?
My home-based studio is in New Jersey.
What is it that you design and create?
Affordable modern art
What is your favorite part of the design process?
I’m excited by the creative process. I really enjoy creating new pieces of artwork, posting them on my site, and tracking their popularity.
How did you come up with your business name?
To be honest I wanted something simple that people could remember easily. Modern Art Everyday is not only simple, but it really describes what I do; a new pieces of art posted daily.
Where/How did this all begin?
After designing consumer flooring for 6 years, I grew tired of office politics and creative constraints. I knew I was capable of so much more. So in early 2005 I began my own business as an experiment. But it soon became obvious that it would be impossible to build a successful business while still working full-time at my “day job”. So with the support of my family, I resigned from the flooring industry and became my own boss. I have never looked back!
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by nature, patterns, texture and color. I find beauty in simple, clean designs with a modern touch. I also feel an obligation to my customers to give them a reason to keep visiting my website and that inspires me.
