Time to learn about our sponsor, Cherry Creek Designs.

Meet Heather Gill of Cherry Creek Designs:
Name: Heather Gill
Business Name: Cherry Creek Designs
Where are you located?
Scottsdale, Arizona (I was born in Hawaii – Oahu)
What is it that you design and create?
Fine silver and semi-precious jewelry
What is your favorite part of the design process?
When the idea first hits me.
What is the mystery behind your business name?
Not much mystery really. I was already starting to work on another area of business – redesign of homes that are for sale. I had already come up with that name for the other business and thought that it could work for my jewelry as well. The jewelry has taken off much better than the redesign business mostly because of us moving. I had set some goals for myself and one of them was to have my shop on Etsy up and running before my birthday. So in order to stay on track with my goals I just used this name and now I like it for my jewelry. I hope to be able to add in other items as time goes on other than jewelry because I have many interests.
Where/How did this all begin?
Before I had my daughter I worked as a chef. I went to culinary school in Portland, Oregon. I needed a creative outlet and took a jewelry making class. Have been hooked ever since.

Let’s learn about one of our sweet sponsors, Twinkle…

Meet Jenny Choe and Cielo Delapaz-Nguyen of Twinkle
Name: Jenny Choe and Cielo Delapaz-Nguyen
Business Name: Twinkle
Where are you located?
California
What is it that you design and create?
Simple, elegant and affordable handmade jewelry.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
Jenny – I love it when a completed design turns out even better than I thought it would.
Cielo – Right at the beginning when my head is exploding with ideas.
How did you come up with your business name?
We wanted a name that was fun like our designs.
Where/How did this all begin?
Jenny – I started making jewelry because it was hard for me to find affordable jewelry that I liked. Soon I was getting compliments on the stuff that I was making, so I thought about starting a website. Luckily, Cielo thought of the same thing at the same time and here we are now.
Who or what inspires you?
Jenny – I love looking at the latest colors and fashions of the season and thinking of jewelry ideas to compliment new outfits that I’ve bought.
Cielo – Shopping! After I come back from the mall I always have a lot of new ideas for jewelry.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Jenny – Don’t give up on your dream. Starting a business is definitely not an easy thing, so you have to work hard to succeed.
Cielo – Having a partner who’s in it with you definitely helps. You have them to succeed for when sometimes all you want to do is give up. And it’s great to have someone to squeal and giggle with when things go well.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Cielo – A really cute red handmade tote with a white daisy applique. I always try to claim that I made it myself.
Jenny – I love this bag that I bought on Etsy. It’s made from this really pretty Japanese fabric.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
Jenny – Beck
Cielo – Alexi Murdoch
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
Jenny – Entourage
Cielo – I’ve been wanting to get into Entourage! Can someone loan me the first season??!
What was the last movie you watched?
Jenny – Bourne Ultimatum. It was so intense!
Cielo – Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley
What’s your favorite food?
Jenny – I have the worst sweet tooth ever, so I’ll eat anything and everything that contains sugar.
Cielo – I recently got back into eating Ramen noodles. Weird huh?
What’s your favorite candy?
Jenny – Oh, man, this is a tough one. I love all sweets, but I get the worst cravings for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
Cielo – 2 words, CANDY CORN. Tastes like wax to some, but heaven to others.
Coffee or Tea?
Cielo – Coffee
Jenny – Tea
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Jenny – I would have to say Barnes & Noble or Borders. I could spend hours in there looking at all the books and deciding on which ones to buy.
Cielo – Baubles and Beads in Berkeley. But besides a bead store, I’d have to agree with Jenny.
Any pets?
Jenny – Nope, but I’d love to get a cat someday.
Cielo – No. I have a big fish tank but so far, no fish yet.
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
Jenny – I just went to Bora Bora recently and it was gorgeous. I’d also like to visit Japan someday.
Cielo – I’d like to go to Bora Bora especially after seeing Jenny’s vacation pictures. I’ve always wanted to go to Thailand especially right after I read that book “The Beach”.
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
Cielo – “GoodLuck Gal” to give luck to those down in the dumps and turn their lives around.
Jenny – Can I be your sidekick?

It’s time to stop and learn a little more about one of our favorite friends, Taryn Hipp.

Meet Taryn Hipp of MY MY
Name: Taryn Hipp
Business Name: MY MY Art + Craft
Where are you located?
15 Byberry Road in Hatboro, PA (we’re open 10-8 most days!)
What is it that you design and create?
I design & create my website firstly & then my store & when I have some “spare time” I spin. I’m hesitant to call myself a fiber artist but it’s what I have the most passion for. I really love dying fiber & spinning. I don’t felt much (intentionally that is). But I also really enjoy printing with my Print Gocco, patches & cards & whatever. It makes me sad to think they aren’t going to be produced anymore. Everyone should totally check out http://www.savegocco.com/.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
For me it’s all about getting to the final product & seeing if it is anything like how I imagined it to be. I’m like that with everything! If I’m making dinner & I’m trying to make lasagna & end up with pasta soup, awesome! If I’m dying fiber & I want it to be a certain color & it isn’t really happening so I do something else & the final product is more awesome than I imagined, then double awesome!
How did you come up with your business name?
I guess it was because I kept thinking “What can I name a shop where I sell my crafts & my art” & then I was all “ok, my my”. It seems pretty selfish, I know. But it’s perfect.
Where/How did this all begin?
The summer of 2004 I was planning my wedding & getting super burned out. I needed a distraction & my friends were making such cool crafts & zines I wanted a place where I could offer them all in one place. I knew of zine distros but I didn’t know of anywhere selling crafts & underground published stuff so I did it. It was pretty hard for me to convince people to let me sell their stuff, especially since I was asking them to consign but a few people like Heidi of My Paper Crane and Sarah of The Small Object were totally into it & so they sent me stuff & I bought a few of my favorite zines in bulk & that was it.
Who or what inspires you?
I’m totally inspired by my niece Annabelle. I know I probably sound like a broken record to anyone who has ever seen or heard me answer this question but the truth is, I don’t have kids & I spend most of my time hanging out with my sisters & Annabelle. She’s so creative & open-minded & just excited about everything. The first time she came to my store we were in the middle of painting, the floor was torn up, it was empty & she still looked around & said “it’s beautiful”. I knew she could see it, she could see what I could see. She’s my favorite artist & my biggest inspiration.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it because you can. Another thing is to never get discouraged. I have some days where I feel like it was a huge mistake opening my store & that no one cares & I’ll never get an order again (I had one of those days recently actually) but then I remember that I LOVE this. I love that I am my own boss & this is mine & I’m helping other indie artists live off of their art, their dream. It’s powerful & really fucking cool.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
Oh lordie, I have many but probably my most favorite is a custom illustration Kathleen of http://www.seamripper.net did for me. It was an illustration of my family at Christmas time. It had all of us. I was knitting, my sister Veronica was on the floor playing with her two kittens, Sean & Marty. My brother Danny & my husband Josh were untangling Christmas lights, my Mom was decorating the tree and my sister Jen & Annabelle were reading Twas the Night Before Christmas. I took it to Kinkos & we had it blown up really big & lamented & I gave it to my mom for Christmas. She hung it over the fireplace like a “real” family portrait.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
You would probably be surprised to hear that I love thrash music & hardcore. Right now I’m listening to Clear which confuses the teenage boys who skate by the store & think it’s some sort of awesome boy store when really, it’s just little old me in my brightly colored boutique! They quickly bolt out the door. But when customers come in I have my “store mix” which is way more shopper-friendly with lots of pop music & popular indie bands my friends told me I “needed” to play. I’m so not up to date on what’s cool. Bikini Kill is still my favorite band!
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
Gilmore Girls, always & forever. BFF!
What was the last movie you watched?
Bridge to Terabithia last night & cried my eyes out. I thought it was a cute Disney movie. I guess I should have read the book, eh? I love those Red Box movie rental machines in the lobby of the grocery store. I can rent movies for a buck. It rules. I went this morning & got The Devil Wears Prada which I haven’t seen because, like music, I’m way behind on the times.
What’s your favorite food?
I super love Mexican food. Burritos are my favorite thing in the world. I also really like veggie sushi.
What’s your favorite candy?
Necos for sure. My husband says they are “colored chalk” but they aren’t, they are DELICIOUS.
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee unless it’s herbal “Bollywood Star” tea by http://www.herbandginger.com, it’s a vegan caffeine-free tea & so so good. I drink it when my goal is to not be wired.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
Ikea. I love it. We also have a pretty good thrift store around the corner called Impact. They always have awesome records & furniture. Annabelle collects unicorn figurines & I pretty much always find at least one every time I’m there!
Any pets?
I have a cat named Sid who is very old & very mean to everyone but me. It’s totally charming.
Any celebrity crushes?
My celeb crushes are always embarrassing. I crush on Logan & Jess from Gilmore Girls (not the actors though, the characters). I’m more of a character crusher than a celeb crusher.
Favorite Holiday?
Christmas is fun because I love love love buying stuff for people. But I also super love Halloween. I always force everyone to do a group costume with me. Everyone gets mad & throws a fit but ends up doing up. A few years ago I convinced my husband to dress up as a Care Bear. He was Grumpy Bear of course & I was “rainbow bear”.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
This isn’t much of a secret but I really wish I could have a dog. But my grumpy mean old cat told me no, never. So I guess it isn’t going to happen. Although my husband says I could get a shop dog who would come to work with me so it wouldn’t be left at home with mr cranky pants. If anyone has a small dog they are looking to get adopted, hit me up! In the meantime, I just play with my parents dog. My mom has a German Shepard named Zoe who is super anxious & thinks the world is out to get everyone she loves. I spend most my time trying to explain to her that she doesn’t need to get up & check the room every few seconds! My Dad has a Westie named Joplin who I absolutely adore more than anything! But has recently moved to California & so I don’t get to see her. I’m having serious Joplin with-drawl.
We’re past summer! Any exciting plans for the rest of the year?
Well, I opened my first shop here in Hatboro! That is probably the most exciting thing that will happen this year…unless I adopt a dog, of course!

Here’s some great info on a fabulous artist from the Trunkt community.
Meet Francesca Vitali of Frucci Design:

Name: Francesca Vitali
TRUNKT URL: www.trunkt.org/fruccidesign
Business Name: Frucci Design
Where are you located?
Southern California
What is it that you design and create?
Paper jewelry
What is your favorite part of the design process?
My favorite part is the open-eyed dream: it starts when an idea materializes in my head and I have to imagine how I can make it happen. At the point I can’t do anything else: I just think of my new idea, that’s so exciting…well at least for me, because from outside, if you look at me while doing that I most probably look like I’m only open-eyed sleeping!
How did you come up with your business name?
Frucci is one of the gazillion ways Rudi, my boyfriend, calls me. One day I was just scribbling a self-portrait when I fitted FRUCCI into my hair style, then I added DESIGN in place of one eye and the nose and that became my logo!
Where/How did this all begin?
I can’t describe the starting point for my design/craft passion, I’ve been creative all my life, that’s who I am! But I can tell you the exact moment I discovered that paper is a great media for jewelry and the all paper jewelry idea has began: It was almost ten years ago, I was in my mom’s kitchen when I came accross a colorful fashion catalog. I had to find a way to use all that color and for some reason I started cutting it in strips and a few hours later I made my first paper necklace, which I still wear!
Who or what inspires you?
Borrowing from a “Shakespeare in Love” quote: “I don’t know. It’s a mystery!”
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Don’t waste your time following others’ dream (as I did): listen to your soul and give your art a chance!
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
Shame on me, I don’t have an iPod. I prefer to listen to radio.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
CSI, Shark, I’m waiting for Closer’s new season and The Tudor. But I also love to watch reruns of the classics like Friends, Sex and the City, Will and Grace or even older such as Murder She Wrote!
What was the last movie you watched?
‘V for Vendetta’. But don’t ask me how I liked it…I fell asleep!
What’s your favorite food?
Pizza, chocolate and gelato
What’s your favorite candy?
Any that has cinnamon in it!
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee…Actually espresso…I’m Italian!
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
ZARA and H&M, for historic reasons: I used to go there with my girlfriends when I was still living in Italy, so whenever I miss them – they all live in Italy – I just go to ZARA or H&M and I’m happy again!
Any Pets?
Not yet, but soon a dog! A pug!
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
Favorite place to visit: Rome, my city!
Place I’d like to visit: Japan, Mexico, Brazil, India just to mention a few…I love traveling so much!
If you could be a superhero, what would your name be and what would be your superpowers?
My name, of course, would be SuperFru and I’d be able to go everywhere in a blink of an eye and I could become invisible.
Any celebrity crushes?
Not really.
Favorite Holiday?
I must say Xmas!
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
Noooo! Don’t ask me to choose one pair of shoe: I simply can’t! I rather be the shoe closet of Sarah Jessica Parker!-)
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
Well before coming here in the US, I secretly wished to be an artist. Now I still wish it, but it is not a secret anymore!
Favorite piece of clothing?
If I have to pick just one I have to admit that when I’m in front of a black pair of trousers I simply have to have them!
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
Yes, Italian of course! and German too, since I’ve lived in Switzerland for 5 years I’ve learned a bit of German…but just a little!
We’re half way through the year! Any exciting plans for the rest of the year?
Oh yes! The whole summer will be full of guests, since we’ve moved in California we have been receiving tons of guests from Italy, especially during summer! And by the end of the year we will probably be moving again, but don’t ask me where we don’t know yet!

Had some other names in mind which were already taken, so I used my own. Can’t imagine anyone else having my given name!
Where/How did this all begin?
Nine years ago, I attended a home jewelry party in my neighborhood. It was unique in that you got to choose your own beads and design your own piece of jewelry; the party hostesses would finish it for you. Time to get to know one of the amazingly talented artists from the Trunkt community.

Meet Carrie Schafer of Original Hardware:
Name: Carrie Schafer
Business Name: Original Hardware
TRUNKT URL: www.trunkt.org/originalhardware
Where are you located?
The Mile High City – Denver, Colorado.
What is it that you design and create?
Hip, handcrafted jewelry that featured organic stones and modern design elements. I sell my work nationwide to a loyal client base and to specialty boutiques.
What is your favorite part of the design process?
For me, the design process is a bit intense. I can mull over a design for days, even weeks, and sometimes it can actually disrupt my sleep. The other night, I actually dreamed about a particular design I’ve been thinking about and when I woke up, I had to stop everything and draw it out. I love the entire process, but I especially love arriving at that “ah-ha” moment when I figured a design out and am ready to hammer it out in the studio.
How did you come up with your business name?
So many designers use their own names, but I didn’t feel that mine really lent itself to the message I wanted to convey. To me, Original Hardware conveys the image of hip, handcrafted designs. At least, that’s my goal!
Where/How did this all begin?
I was a marketing/PR executive in Corporate America for many years and a woman in my office started making beaded bracelets. The Type A person in me said I could make a better bracelet. Once I visited the bead store, I knew I was hooked. When my husband started inquiring about all the charges in my bank account to stores with the word “bead” in them, I knew I had a problem! Friends started buying my work, and my techie husband built me a Web site. Next thing you know, I’m nationwide, baby!
Who or what inspires you?
Experiences I’ve had, particularly those traveling around the world. A tangerine sky as a whale breaches out of the Pacific Ocean is just the same color as the carnelian stone in a pair of earrings. The way a hammered pendant shimmers in the light reminds me of waves dancing in the sun on a remote Hawaiian beach. I remember colors as a vivid part of my experiences, and they as a whole inspire me.
What advice would you give other independent artists who are just starting out?
Be original. Think about who you are and have your designs reflect that. So many designers try to copy others. At the end of the day, the work is a reflection of who you are. Be that – it’s much more interesting, and I think it adds value to a design.
What is your favorite indie purchase or trade?
I bought a set of personalized greeting cards that I loved so much, I bought them for each of my female family members for Christmas. I am in awe of how much creativity there is out there – I am inspired.
What’s on your iPod/music player right now?
An eclectic mix of songs – everything from Big Head Todd and the Monsters to Black Eyed Peas. Prince, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, 50-cent. No country, though.
What t.v. shows are you currently hooked on?
My husband and I are Reno 911 and LOST fanatics, and I am going to watch the Sopranos to the end.
What was the last movie you watched?
I have a 17-month old son – what’s a movie?
What’s your favorite food?
Hands-down, Mexican. I could eat it everday.
What’s your favorite candy?
I haven’t met a candy I didn’t like. Seriously. It’s such a bad addiction, I actually gave it up as a New Year’s resolution. In my serious candy-eating days, I was known to have a stash of Junior Mints in my desk…
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee, hands down. My husband and I invested in a “super automatic” coffee maker a few years ago. I am going to take it with me to the grave.
What store could you walk around in for hours and be happy?
There’s a local bead store that makes me quite content.
Any pets?
One very old, but sweet and insanely loyal Border Collie Mix – Shadow.
Favorite place to visit or place you’d like to visit?
I loved traveling through Europe and Asia, but have an intense interest in South America, particularly Macchu Picchu.
Any celebrity crushes?
Not really. It probably sounds corny, but my husband is the best ever. He supports my passion and is my best friend. I feel very fortunate!
Favorite Holiday?
I love Christmas. It’s my busiest time of year on the business side, so it feels good to be so busy. On a personal level, I love to cook, so it’s a lot of fun to spend time with my old Bon Appetit’s drumming up a fabulous meal.
If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?
Definitely a Donald Pliner pointy-toed black boot. I have a pair that I’ve worn into the ground, and they look stylish with virtually anything. The man knows good design, and damn, his shoes are awesome.
What do you secretly wish you could do/be?
I am doing it. I worked as a corporate exec for many years, and hoped one day I’d get the chance to do what I really loved – designing jewelry. When my son was born, I got that chance. I feel so fortunate to have this opportunity to pursue what I love.
Favorite piece of clothing?
A long white tank top – the perfect backdrop for a fabulous necklace!
Do you speak any other languages? If not, would you like to learn one?
Many years ago, I was pretty conversational in Spanish. I wish I could still speak it as good as I did back then.
We’re halfway through the year! Any exciting plans for the rest of the year?
My focus for the rest of the year is to continue to build my clientele, particularly on the wholesale side. That’s why Trunkt is such an invaluable resource for me. My membership has been so rewarding and has given me considerable exposure that has led to increased sales. I can’t wait to see the future business that it brings!
