A Short Break…

I am away from Mixed Plate (thus explaining the recent lack of posts) until February 6 due to a family emergency.  I will be checking in on my mail when possible and will try to respond to everyone as soon as I can.  Thank you so much for your patience.

Aloha.

Hit the ‘Send’ Button…

I’ll admit that I enjoy having things like email and cell phones for the convenience. I’m still, however, a huge fan of paper and handwritten notes. HOWEVER…these e-cards are so funny that I had to share them with you.

Someecards.com is a company that was created by Brook Lundy and Duncan Mitchell and designed by Jerry Tamburro. I believe you have to subscribe for the services, but am not sure of the costs. Some cards at the site are a little much for me, but some make me giggle a little (evil, I know). A little sarcasm never hurt anyone, right?

Happy Turkey (or Tofurky) Day!

Hope you are all enjoying your day with friends and family.  We’ve already had too much to eat and, of course, have leftovers in the fridge!  Here’s wishing all of you a fun, relaxing and safe holiday!

I Feel The Earth Move….

Yes, we had an earthquake in Hawaii! Strange, right? Yup, we were awaken by a shaking bed and house yesterday a little after 7:00 am. For most of us the power was out for most of the day and evening (ours came on sometime after 10:30 pm in the middle of the night). Unfortunately, I heard that some still didn’t have power this morning! That’s why a number of our traffic lights are not working yet.

The most damage was done to the Big Island in Kona. They had to evacuate and close a couple of things like Kona Community Hospital and a few hotels. I’m hoping my Aunty is alright who works lives in the area where the earthquake originated…she also works at a hotel that had some damage to it.

On the news there are a bunch of folks at the Honolulu International Airport that were stranded from yesterday and had no food. I feel really sad that there are some unhappy people that were here on their honeymoons, dream vacations and some that even have kids. Hopefully it will all be resolved soon and planes will be in the air.

In addition to this earthquake excitement we are having odd rainy weather. Funny that even though there were predicted clouds, showers and possible thunder showers it remains a bit humid!

Plus yesterday my husband’s cousin had her son’s first birthday party. Some people weren’t able to make it since we were told to stay off the roads and weren’t sure the party was still on. Luckily the caterers had made the food really early in the morning so we could eat! Those of us that did show up had a nice time talking story with family, sharing our earthquake experiences, eating some local food and hanging out in the dark.

Finally, I really want to thank everyone for their emails and for thinking of me. I appreciate your thoughts. Wow, I felt so special this morning when I was able to get online and check my emails and saw that there was concern! Thanks!!! :o)

Recycling Your Bicycle

So this is a little bit for my husband. He is a cyclist and loves bicycles, bike parts, bike races - almost anything to do with the sport of cycling. So when I first saw picture frames from this same designer a while back I immediately thought of him.

At Resource Revival bicycle parts are salvaged and turned in to amazing items like CD racks, clocks and even furniture. Rolled inner tubes, rims, cogs and chains are a few of the parts that are used at this shop. Graham Bergh started his company in 1991 when biking to his recycling job and getting a flat tire. His imagination was sparked by this incident and he’s been creating and recycling with bike parts since 1994.

Since then his collection has grown along with his company. What started out in a rented home to a shack is now a business that has moved to a ten acre farm area in Mosier, Oregon with warehouses and a production studio. Recycling really is the way to go…

Please visit their site to learn more about this amazing company. They recycle and are working toward a world of that is “powered by renewable energy, and where consumers are conscious of the origin of the products they buy.” What a great mission!

Here are a couple of cool things you’ll find at Resource Revival

It’s New to Me…

There are a few shows that I’ve only started seeing recently (like, within the last year or so) that I can’t believe I never used to watch. I don’t watch them religiously, but if I see them on I may check it out for a little while. For example, Seinfeld. Of course, the show is over and they play the re-runs and I think they are so funny! Why did I not watch this show when it was still on the air?

One of my favorites is Felicity. Okay, so stop laughing at me. It’s a cute show. It’s sweet and it makes me want to move to New York and go to college. Or move anywhere and be back in school having all of those experiences that you do when you’re a teenager and trying to discover and learn new things about yourself.

They show Felicity on the WE Channel and I happened to catch it one day when I was at home. Of course I was hooked immediately and would even, on occasion, tape it. Yes, I did.

So, the show was on the air from 1998-2002 (hello, where was I?) and I can’t believe I never ever watched one single episode. I remember hearing about this girl who cut her gorgeous hair off and that fans didn’t like it…but I can’t even guarantee that I remember hearing that back when it happened. Weird, huh? Hey, I couldn’t even find a current blog about the show, only this one.

Anyway, I like the show. There are DVD collections out for all of the seasons. Will I get them? Not sure if I’d actually watch them…then again, I said the same about Grey’s Anatomy and I watch that!

Try checking out the show if you’re like me and never saw it either. Check the WE site for times and episodes. Even if you end up not liking the show…you have to admit there are cute boys on it (which makes it nice). Hey, the WE channel runs commercials for the show that say, “Did you get to go to college with boys that were this cute? Neither did we!”…Ok, so now you HAVE to watch!

Silkscreened Posters?

Yup. Aren’t these gorgeous? I went over to their site and discovered the talent that overflows there. The graphics, colors and details on these are awesome. Studio 18Hundred is a New York City based screenprinting design studio.

Check them out now and get ready to be impressed.

Thanks to the wonderful blog that introduced me to this site!

My Superhero(es)…

DC Comics Super Heroes Stamps

Have you seen these new stamps? If you’re a fan of comic books, you will probably enjoy these DC Comic Super Heroes stamps. I first saw them at my local post office last week. I ended up purchasing a sheet of them for my nephew since he’s pretty in to superheroes, especially with all of the movies they’re making about them!

Oh, and the best part…They cost the same as the regular and plain stamps you would normally purchase ($7.80 for a sheet of 20). So why not spruce up your snail mail! Head out to the post office or go to the USPS website to purchase them.
